Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #43
11th March, 2012
The top four in the Baris NCEL Premier Division all won on Saturday as the title chase enters into its final straight.
Bridlington Town remain at the summit ahead of Retford United on goal difference after both sides enjoyed comfortable victories.
Bridlington were 4-1 winners at Tadcaster Albion with Craig Hogg netting twice to make it 33 goals in all competitions this season, his second a superb lob over the Brewers keeper from near the halfway line.
Christopher Jenkinson and Billy Logan also got on the scoresheet for the Seasiders.
Retford won 4-0 at home to bottom side Selby Town who tasted their fifth straight defeat courtesy of an Adam Scott brace and goals from Chris Baugh and Warren Hatfield.
Staveley Miners Welfare kept in touching distance in third after their 3-1 victory at Barton Town Old Boys.
Ryan Damms struck his 24th of the season on the half-hour before James Walker doubled Staveley's advantage before the interval.
Gareth Owen pulled one back for Barton but Shaun Tuton made sure it was eight games in a row without defeat for Staveley with two minutes remaining.
Jake Stannard struck twice to help Winterton Rangers to a 3-0 win at Armthorpe Welfare and keep them fourth in the table.
Parkgate climbed into fifth with a 6-0 victory at home to Lincoln Moorlands Railway, with three of the goals - two from Matthew Needham and the third from Danny Barlow - coming in the first quarter-of-an-hour.
Railway, who have gone six games without a victory, are now looking nervously over their shoulders at the bottom two after Maltby Main moved to within four points of them with 1-0 win at Nostell Miners Welfare.
Scarborough Athletic dropped out of the top five after they were beaten 2-1 by visitors Arnold Town, Luke Smithson and Martin Carruthers getting the points for the Eagles before there was a late consolation from Curtis Bernard for the hosts.
And, there were away victories for Thackley and Pickering Town, 2-0 at Hall Road Rangers and 3-1 at Long Eaton United, respectively.
Handsworth won the battle of the top two in Division One to claim their eighth straight victory and extend their lead at the top to three points.
Hosts Pontefract Collieries were two up after 37 minutes with Greig McGrory and Gary Lumley seemingly putting them in full control.
But, Sam Smith struck twice in the second period, once from the penalty spot, to make it 27 goals for him this season and Faffy Gnindi also netted to turn the game around in a 3-2 victory for the visitors.
Glasshoughton Welfare go above their local rivals into second spot after their 2-1 win at home to Dinnington Town but they needed Josh Moore to snatch the three points in the 89th minute.
Fourth placed Albion Sports kept on the coat tails of the top three with a 5-0 home victory over Yorkshire Amateur, Danny Brown scoring twice whilst Alex Cusack also picked up his 27th goal of the campaign.
Tom Nolan's penalty and a strike from Gavin Allott each side of half-time earned Worksop Parramore a 2-0 win over visitors Teversal to stay fifth whilst Rossington Main beat hosts Bottesford Town 4-0 to move up into the top six.
Bottom side Appleby Frodingham suffered their twelfth consecutive defeat as they went down 7-1 at home to Shirebrook Town.
They had taken the lead through Ben Shipman but Dean Short quickly equalised and, from thereon, it was the visitors' afternoon with Julian Topliss grabbing a hat-trick.
Nineteenth-placed Grimsby Borough, who have not tasted victory in the league since October, were beaten 4-1 at AFC Emley.
Askern Villa and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic both claimed 1-0 home wins over Hemsworth Miners Welfare and Louth Town, respectively, whilst honours were even between Hallam and Eccleshill United with a 1-1 draw, the only game to finish all square in the Baris NCEL at the weekend.
