NCEL Weekend Review
30th April, 2007
Retford United are the Premier Division champions following an awesome display at home to Eccleshill United.
Needing just a point to secure the title, a hat-trick from Mick Godber, two each from Lee Holmes and Mark Ashton, and one from Michael Simpkins saw them win 8-0 at Cannon Park.
It caps off a wonderful season for the Badgers in which they also won the Presidents Cup and will mean two successive promotions for the North Nottinghamshire side.
The team that followed them up last year from Division One, Carlton Town, also look set to join them in the UniBond League.
They travelled to Garforth Town in a match that would see the winners claim third place and it was the Nottingham club that triumphed.
Joe Irons put them ahead in the opening minute before Bret Renshaw grabbed an equaliser early in the second period.
But, as the game went into injury time, there was a dramatic twist in front of 564 spectators as Dean Gent found the net for the visitors.
Garforth, therefore, have to settle for fourth whilst Glapwell moved up into fifth with a 5-2 home victory over Maltby Main.
Ian Brown grabbed a hat-trick for the Hall Corner side whilst Marc Sherlock and Joel Hodgkinson also got on the scoresheet.
Luke Fletcher and Scott Somerville got Main's goals on either side of half-time.
Glapwell will now travel to Selby Town in midweek as both teams look to finish in the top five after Selby dropped to sixth after losing 3-1 at home to Thackley.
Matthew Mathers, Dean Walters and Nicky Matthews struck for the visitors to make it an excellent end to the season for the side that has finished eighteenth, whilst Andrew Dawson scored for Selby.
The win for Thackley means that Shirebrook Town finish in the bottom two despite a 2-1 win at local rivals Sutton Town.
Adam Lee had put the Snipes ahead before a late brace from Jamie Tagg gave the visitors the victory.
A Dave Middleditch strike on 65 minutes saw Mickleover Sports end their season with a single-goal win at home to Hallam.
And, there were 3-0 victories for Pickering Town and Liversedge.
Pickering picked up the points at Glasshoughton Welfare with two goals from Liam Salt and one from Steve Baxter.
Lee McKeown, Danny Ryan and Jordan Maltas scored for Sedge in their comfortable home win over Arnold Town.
In the final round of matches in Division One, Winterton Rangers secured second spot with an 11-0 annihilation of visitors Yorkshire Amateur.
There were hat-tricks for three players, Andy Holt, Andy Catton and Rob Northen whilst Steve Ward and James Atkinson also added to the visitors' woes.
Rangers finish ahead of South Normanton Athletic who lost 3-2 at fourth-placed Nostell Miners Welfare.
Danny Highley put the hosts ahead after eight minutes before Jerod Holmes equalised in first-half injury-time.
It looked as though the Shiners would take the points when Kieron Heath put the visitors in the lead with eighteen minutes remaining but Dave Nicholas and Oli Johnson turned the game round in Nostell's favour.
Tadcaster Albion climbed to seventh, the only movement on the final day, with a 3-1 home win over Gedling Town whilst Hall Road Rangers finished on a high after a 74th-minute Adam Walker goal gave them a single goals victory over visitors Borrowash Victoria.
Richie Walker scored nine minutes from time to end Teversal's season with a 1-0 victory at home to Pontefract Collieries.
And, Lincoln Moorlands were 2-0 victors over AFC Emley at Newark Road.
