A race night takes place this weekend for a charity set up by two Worksop Parramore players to provide kit and equipment to local teams, players and villages in Uganda.Ashley Foyle and Matty Thorpe are behind Academy Africa which consists of FA Qualified Football Coaches who help deliver training sessions as well as pass on skills and knowledge.
The charity came about when a member of the team's father went on an expedition trip to the East African country and found that they had a real passion for the sport and was stunned by the reaction of the local village when he gave them a football to keep.
So far, the team has been on one trip out to Uganda back in April 2012 and they aim to make this at least an annual occurrence.
To raise the money needed for the trip last year, they did a number of fundraising events such as a race night, sponsored abseil and charity football game and, also thanks to some very generous donations from local businesses, they collected around ?4,000.
They aim to raise around ?6,000 in 2013 and fundraising for this year begins with a charity race night at Chesterfield FC's Proact Stadium this weekend (see poster at bottom) where everybody is welcome.
Academy Africa will also be seeking help and support from companies and businesses and football clubs.
Their website -
www.academyafrica.com - gives more information about what they did on their trip.
Anyone wanting to donate money is asked to text AAUG13 ??? to 70070. All donations plus 20% extra through GiftAid goes straight into the Academy Africa account.
And, any company that is willing to offer them their support will have their logo/brand/company name on their website with a message of thanks as well as mentions on social networking sites.
