Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #74

14th April, 2024

Emley AFC's 3-0 home win over Bottesford Town in the JCP Construction League Cup on Saturday means the Pewits still have a chance to claim the Toolstation NCEL double.

The Premier Division champions progressed to the Semi-Finals courtesy of first half goals from James Knowles, Alex Metcalfe and Iyrwah Gooden.

It was one of two cup games played, the other being the Third Round tie between Silsden AFC and Knaresborough Town that went to a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw.

Bradley Walker had given Knaresborough a 23rd minute lead but parity was restored early in the second half through Luke Brooksbank for the hosts and that is how it stayed with Silsden winning 5-3 on spot kicks to set up a last eight tie at Parkgate.

Three games were played in the Premier Division with Rossington Main finishing their league campaign and preparing for the play-offs with a 2-0 home victory over Pickering Town.

Ross Hannah grabbed both of their goals and they will next travel to either Campion or Garforth Town in the play-off semi-finals for a chance for promotion to Step 4.

Reece Moody struck twice for Barton Town in their 4-2 win at Golcar United, Thomas Waudby and Clark Greaves also getting on the scoresheet for the Swans, whilst Daniel Naidole and Oliver Russon netted for the hosts.

And, Eccleshill United were 1-0 winners over Frickley Athletic in a game that was switched to their opponents' venue so it could go ahead, Harvey Booth with the vital strike in the 86th minute.

The Division One title race continues to be a thriller with only five points still separating the top five sides.

Beverley Town remain at the summit after their 2-2 draw at fellow title challengers Retford United, Joshua Batty twice equalising for them after Jake Champion and Max Pemberton had given the hosting Badgers the lead.

Shirebrook Town's 3-0 home win over Armthorpe Welfare, courtesy of an Anthony Dwyer hat-trick, moves them up to second, behind Beverley on goal difference.

Wakefield AFC, who were without a game, drop to third, three points off the top and a point ahead of fourth-placed Retford United.

And, Parkgate are a further point behind in fifth after their 0-0 home draw with Yorkshire Amateur but the Steelmen have at least three games in hand on all four sides above them.

Wombwell Town kept up their slim hopes of a last minute charge into the play-offs as Rikki Paylor, Owen Sykes, Gadhafi Kiwanuka and Rhys Plater scored in their 4-0 win over visitors Harrogate Railway Athletic.

The Wellers are the only side who can gatecrash the end of season party, nine points behind the top five with four games left to play.

At the other end of the table, Glasshoughton Welfare drew 0-0 at Brigg Town to keep themselves still in with a chance of finishing outside of the relegation zone but they now need to win their final two games to have any opportunity of doing so.

Ollerton Town and Swallownest, who are both confirmed in the bottom three, were beaten at home with Ollerton falling to an 11-0 loss at the hands of Selby Town.

Edward Dry scored five of the Robins' goals whilst there were two each for Daniel Davison, Liam Love and Tawheed Ahmed.

James Cusworth and Curtis Senior, meanwhile, were the scorers for Horbury Town in their 2-0 win at Swallownest.

There were 2-1 victories for Retford FC and Louth Town with Matthew Parkin scoring both goals at Athersley Recreation and Bailey Wright doing the same at home to Dronfield Town, respectively.

And, in another game with the venue switched to the designated away side, Clay Cross Town won 1-0 against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Reece Clegg with the 44th minute decider.
