Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #73

12th April, 2024

Penistone Church kept their hopes of a Toolstation NCEL Premier Division play-off place alive whilst Beverley Town beat title rivals Parkgate to go top of Division One in midweek.

Needing a victory to maintain a late charge into fifth spot, Church trailed 2-0 at home to Silsden AFC with twenty minutes remaining, Luke Brooksbank and Kayle Price with the goals that seemingly had assured Albion Sports the final play-off berth.

But, Leon Hurles-Brook and Nathan Keightley restored parity before Antony Brown grabbed an 86th minute winner to secure all three points for the hosts who need to win their remaining two matches to leapfrog Sports on goal difference.

Elsewhere, in another rain-affected programme, champions Emley AFC ended their league campaign with a 5-2 victory at Pickering Town.

Nathan Dyer got both of the home side's goals but Ruben Jerome's double, along with one each from Iyrwah Gooden, Joe Clegg and James Knowles, meant sure it was the visiting Pewits who claimed the spoils.

Tadcaster Albion concluded their season with a 4-0 home victory over Hallam, Oliver Norman, Charlie Owen, Junayd Cassius-Gill and Joseph Crosby with the Brewers' goals.

Tadcaster are currently tenth but are likely to finish twelfth after the teams below them conclude their fixtures.

In Division One, Beverley are at the summit after their 2-1 home win over Parkgate saw them jump to the top as the title race continues to be extremely unpredictable.

Joe McFadyen scored both of their goals whilst Ahmed Tahar pulled one back for the Steelmen.

Beverley are two points clear of second-placed Wakefield AFC with two games in hand but any of the top five still have a chance of lifting the trophy.

Parkgate bounced back on Thursday in their second midweek game as two goals each for Tahar and Silas Valladolid-Collins helped them to a 6-1 home win over Selby Town.

Ross Duggan and Jack Haslam also got on the scoresheet for the hosts who stay fifth, five points behind Beverley but with three games more to play, whilst Liam Love struck for Selby who are fourteenth.

Another title challenger, fourth-placed Retford United, are four points off the top after Derek O'Connor and Max Pemberton struck in their 2-0 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

But, Horbury Town's mathematical hopes of a late charge into the play-offs came to an end with their goalless draw at Louth Town.

And, in the West Riding County Cup, Wakefield's semi-final at Pontefract Collieries was abandoned after 82 minutes with the Colls 4-0 ahead.

The game was stopped due to a medical emergency involving a supporter.
