Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #69

29th March, 2024

Emley AFC are now just two points away from securing the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title after their hard fought 1-0 home victory over promotion rivals Albion Sports in midweek.

Iyrwah Gooden struck the vital winner on 69 minutes to mean that the Pewits will lift the trophy if they win at Goole AFC on Saturday.

Sports, meanwhile, remain in fifth spot as their hunt for a play-off berth continues.

An Iren Wilson double secured Hallam a 2-1 victory at Barton Town with Thomas Waudby pulling one back for the Swans after the hour mark on Tuesday night.

Both sides were due to also play on Thursday but Hallam's home clash with Thackley was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Barton's game did go ahead and it proved a massive night for visitors Maltby Main who won 2-0 to keep their hopes of Premier Division survival alive.

Mackenzie Warne and Marc Newsham struck in the second period to claim a vital victory for the basement side who close the gap to safety to four points.

Two of the sides in the title chase in Division One were both winners in midweek.

Shirebrook Town extended their lead at the summit to six points with a 3-1 home win over Harrogate Railway Athletic, Rio Allan, Danny South and Kieren Watson with their goals.

Sam Clothier grabbed a consolation for the Rail who stay eleventh.

Two late goals for Ross Duggan secured Parkgate a 2-0 victory against visitors Clay Cross Town on Tuesday and they made it a winning double as they beat hosts Selby Town 5-2 on Thursday night.

Duggan claimed another brace whilst there was one each for Silas Valladolid-Collins, Jack Haslam and Liam Tomlinson and it means the Steelmen are fourth, nine points behind Shirebrook but with six games in hand.

Retford United strengthened their grip on a play-off place as an Adam Chapman double and a Gregg Smith strike ensured a 3-1 home win over Louth Town to increase the gap between themselves and sixth-placed Horbury Town to eight points.

Swallownest's place in the relegation zone was confirmed with a 4-1 loss at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Alex Hutchinson netting twice and one each from Harley Holt and Jack Appleyard condemning them to their fate.

Rio Korbel scored both of Yorkshire Amateur's goals as a 2-1 home victory over Nostell Miners Welfare eased them further away from the bottom three, with there now being a nine point gap between themselves and the trap door.

Meanwhile, the JCP Construction League Cup Quarter-Finals got underway with two ties in midweek.

Richard Collier and Matthew Hughes dragged Frickley Athletic back level in a 2-2 draw at home with Campion whose double from Nathan Cartman had given the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead.

Campion then prevailed 4-2 on penalties to become the first side through to the final four.

A shoot-out was also needed as Handsworth and Rossington Main played out a 1-1 draw, Manasse Kiange's first half opener for the visitors cancelled out in the 83rd minute by Alfie Dodsworth, with Main progressing 5-3 on spot kicks.

And, congratulations to Knaresborough Town who are through to the final of the West Riding County Cup after a 2-1 home win over Guiseley.

Danny Edwards brought them back level in first half stoppage time and Dominic Creamer grabbed a dramatic late winner to send his side through at the expense of their higher-ranked visitors.
