Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #51

25th January, 2024

A very wet and windy Tuesday night did not stop Campion and Emley AFC from progressing to the Quarter-Finals of this season's JCP Construction League Cup.

Both Premier Division sides overcame the elements and stiff Division One competition to make it through to the next stage with Campion sneaking through on penalties after grabbing an injury-time equaliser at Beverley Town.

The home side twice took the lead through Joe McFadyen and Alexander Knaggs with Aidan Day and Samuel Bradley netting equalisers for Campion, the second coming in the 92nd minute.

The visitors then prevailed 5-3 on spot kicks, knowing they had come through a tough challenge.

Emley, meanwhile, went behind at Louth Town through a Jordan Smith opener but the Pewits restored parity just before the half-hour mark, courtesy of Joe Jagger.

James Knowles then bagged what proved to be the winner for Emley, pouncing in the 65th minute to make it 2-1 to the Premier Division side.

And, in Wednesday night's tie, Handsworth were 5-2 home victors over Brigg Town, Leon Howarth opening the scoring in the eighteenth minute before Alfie Dodsworth doubled the Ambers' advantage early in the second period.

Aaron Moxam then grabbed a hat-trick to put the tie beyond doubt although Brigg got on the scoresheet in injury time with goals from Luke Anderson and Brett Agnew.

In Division One, Athersley Recreation move to eleven points clear of the relegation zone after a 6-1 win at Armthorpe Welfare who remain just a point above the trapdoor.

Oliver McQuillan broke the deadlock and an own goal gave the away side a two-goal advantage by the interval, a lead that was increased in the second period through Harrison Landon, Callum Clark, James Woodhouse and Kenneth Tafireyi with Charlie Clegg grabbing a late consolation for the hosts.

And, there were two goals each for George Morris and Reece Clegg as Clay Cross Town were 6-1 victors over neighbours and basement side Ollerton Town.

William Whitehead and Gracjan Klimczak also scored for Clay Cross, who were the home team despite the fixture venue being reversed, with all their goals coming after Tom Sowden had put Ollerton in front.

In county cup action, Frickley Athletic bowed out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Quarter-Finals.

And, there were two goals for Luke Ayris in a 6-1 home friendly win for Bottesford Town against St Mary's AFC whilst Shirebrook Town and visitors Hallam drew 2-2 at Langwith Road in their practice match.
