Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #34

23rd November, 2023

Dronfield Town and Brigg Town both produced shocks in the midweek JCP Construction League Cup ties as the Toolstation NCEL Division One sides knocked out Premier Division opposition at the Second Round stage.

Dronfield trailed 1-0 at the interval at Maltby Main through an injury-time Samuel Bebbington own goal but the second half belonged to the visitors as a Max Rhodes brace and one each for James Lindores and Owen Lester secured them a 4-1 win to book a place in the Third Round.

Brigg, meanwhile, looked to be exiting the competition after Danny Buttle's penalty had given away side Hallam a 25th minute lead that held until stoppage time.

Reagan Waud netted an equaliser with just seconds remaining to make it a 1-1 draw and the Zebras went through 4-2 in the shoot-out.

There was also penalties drama in the encounter between Emley AFC and Garforth Town after it finished 2-2 after ninety minutes.

Paul Walker had put the hosts ahead early in the tie but Sam Barker levelled on 58 minutes and Matthew Antcliff gave the visiting Miners the lead before Alex Metcalfe popped up in stoppage time to ensure another shoot-out in the midweek cup action, this one won 4-3 by Emley.

There were a number of matches in county cup competitions involving our sides, with Pickering Town 5-2 home winners over Fishburn Park to progress to the next stage of the North Riding Senior Cup.

Omar Sanyang grabbed a couple for the Pikes in their Second Round tie with Wayne Brooksby and Nathan Dyer also netting whilst an own goal added to their tally.

Parkgate were the other side to taste victory in the county cups as a Ross Duggan hat-trick, added to by one each from Brandon Potts and Brandon Whitfield, ensured a 5-0 win over AFC Phoenix in the Third Round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

Rossington Main twice led against Worksop Town in the same competition but were pegged back on both occasions to deny them a hard-fought win against higher-ranked opposition.

Bradley Grayson and Gregory Young were the goalscorers for Rossington in a game that ended 2-2 but the hosts were agonisingly beaten 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

Barton Town came even closer to causing an upset in the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy Quarter-Finals as only an injury-time equaliser for their hosts saw the Swans draw 2-2 at Lincoln United before being beaten 5-3 on spot kicks.

A Sean Wright own goal and Samuel Cable's strike had given Barton a perfect start before the home side dragged themselves back level and went through to final four.

And, Bottesford Town went down 2-1 at home to Skegness Town to bow out of that competition in the last eight, Luke Ayris scoring an equaliser for the Poachers on the hour before the visitors took the game with their second on 76 minutes.

Meanwhile, Campion extended their lead at the top of the Premier Division to four points with a 4-2 home win over Goole AFC.

Michael O'Brien put the hosts ahead before Jacob Bradley levelled the scores, Marcus Day and Joseph Colley then struck twice in quick succession to give Campion a 3-1 lead, Matthew Langley gave Goole hope with their second on 89 minutes but Aidan Kirby made certain of the victory in stoppage time.

Frickley Athletic climb to fifth after a remarkable 4-4 home draw with Knaresborough Town who stay twelfth.

The sides had shared six goals going into stoppage time when Bradley Walker had seemingly given the away side the points with a 92nd minute strike but six minutes later Frickley were awarded a penalty that was converted by Lloyd Smith, making it a point apiece.

In Division One, Selby Town raced into a three goal lead at home to Glasshoughton Welfare with a Daniel Davison brace added to by Harry Clapham in the opening half-hour.

Harry Spooner struck twice for the away side to bring them back into the game but the Robins held on to take the points in a 3-2 victory that sees them up to twelfth.

Harrogate Railway Athletic edged a tight game at basement outfit Swallownest, Sam Clothier's spot kick on 57 minutes separating the sides for a win that cements tenth spot for the Rail.

And, Armthorpe Welfare picked up three points that they hope will act as a springboard in their bid to move out of the bottom three, closing the gap to safety to eight points.

They won 4-2 at Retford United, courtesy of an Aiden Tomes brace and one each for Luke Williams and Callum Brook, whilst Liam Owen and Owen Fieldsend had netted for the hosts who remain in eight position.
