Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #32

16th November, 2023

Wombwell Town became the latest side to book their place in the Third Round of this season's JCP Construction League Cup as they survived a late comeback from visitors Athersley Recreation to win 3-2 in midweek.

Edward Agnew and Gareth McDermott had given them a two goal cushion by the interval and when Bradley Kerr added their third early in the second period it looked as though the tie was over.

But, the Rec were given a glimmer of hope when Owen Sykes put into his own net and Sam Thompson popped up with their second in stoppage time but they ran out of time in a bid to get a leveller.

It was one of five matches that went ahead on Tuesday as half of the night's games fell victim to bad weather, adding to Monday's postponement for Campion in the West Riding County Cup.

Wakefield AFC's tie in that competition did go ahead, however, as they won 2-1 at Toolstation NCEL Division One rivals Selby Town to move through to the Second Round.

Jack Durkin grabbed their winner in the 85th minute after Harry Clapham's penalty for their hosts had cancelled out their opener from Mason Rubie.

There was late drama as Emley AFC returned to the top of the Premier Division with a 3-2 win at Frickley Athletic who stay sixth in a match that was goalless until after the hour mark.

Alhassane Keita gave the home side the lead before Charlie Barks and Ruben Jerome netted to give the visiting Pewits the advantage going into the last ten minutes.

Parity was restored once more through Lewis Binns but deep in stoppage time Emley took the points with Jerome's second of the evening and they go above Campion on goal difference.

Hallam, meanwhile, are up to eighth following their 3-0 home victory over Silsden AFC with Nathan Carman, Daniel Burns and Calum Ward getting on the scoresheet for the Countrymen.

And, in Wednesday night's match, Brice Ghussein's double added to Zackary Sangster's opener for Eccleshill United as they defeated visitors Maltby Main 3-0 to climb to sixteenth.

In Division One, Yorkshire Amateur move eleven points clear of the bottom three with a 2-1 win at one of the sides in the drop zone, Ollerton Town.

The hosts had taken the lead through Jamal Stewart but Birama Diallo struck twice, once towards the end of each half, to give the Ammers a vital victory on their travels.

Spencer Clarke and Liam Owen were the scorers for Retford United as they move up to seventh following their 2-1 home win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Harley Holt with the goal for the visitors.

And, Brett Agnew scored two for Brigg Town in their 5-1 victory at home to Armthorpe Welfare, Harry Milner, Ben Vasquez and Henry Ellis also netting for the Zebras who climb to twelfth whilst Welfare, whose goal game courtesy of Jack Holden, are ten points from safety in the bottom three.
