Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #20

5th October, 2023

Albion Sports moved to the top of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division with a single-goal victory at Golcar United in midweek.

Lewis Waddington's strike for the Lions in the 56th minute helped his side leapfrog Silsden AFC and Campion, who were without a game, to the summit whilst Thackley, Frickley Athletic and Rossington Main all missed out on a chance to close in on the early leaders.

Thackley were beaten 5-2 at home by Goole AFC, Liam Flanagan's double added to by one each from Ben Gelder, Callum Petch and Alex Washington in a priceless victory for the visiting Vikings who climb off the foot of the table.

Frickley remain two points behind Thackley in sixth after a Brandon Murillo own goal and a Danny Buttle penalty condemned them to a 2-0 loss at Hallam who climb to ninth.

James Walshaw's brace, along with a goal from Donae Lawrence, saw Rossington fall to a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Emley AFC, leaving Main in seventh whilst the Pewits climb to twelfth.

And, in the last of the Tuesday top flight games, Jason Davis' quickfire double towards the end of the game saw Garforth Town prevail 2-0 at home to Penistone Church.

Meanwhile, Wednesday night's match between Maltby Main and Tadcaster Albon was abandoned goalless after fifteen minutes due to floodlight failure.

In Division One, Nostell Miners Welfare remain in second spot, three points off leaders Wombwell Town, after they were beaten 3-0 at home by Shirebrook Town who jump into fifth.

Kieren Watson grabbed two of the away side's goals whilst Ashley Grayson also got on the scoresheet as the Derbyshire outfit continue their surge up the table.

Alexander Knaggs scored twice in Beverley Town's 2-1 home victory over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to keep his side in third spot, closing the gap to the summit to five points.

It was a remarkable match that saw Beverley reduced to ten men after just fifteen seconds due to the sending off of James Piercy, thought to be the fastest dismissal in NCEL history.

There was a hat-trick for Lewis McCaskill as Retford United swept visitors Swallownest aside in a 7-0 win to climb to fourth, Mark West adding a couple with one each for Spencer Clarke and Owen Fieldsend.

The Badgers' neighbours also had a comfortable win, as Retford FC defeated hosts Yorkshire Amateur 6-0 with Liam Frost's opening double added to by Liam Bennett, Haydn Goddard, Kenan McKenzie-Gray and Aaron Sennett-Neilson.

Parkgate are overtaken by Shirebrook after they suffered their first league defeat of the season and drop to sixth, a Kieran Perry brace and a Jordan Smith strike ensuring a 3-1 victory for visitors Louth Town with Liam Royles grabbing a consolation for the defeated Steelmen.

Wakefield AFC remain behind Parkgate in seventh, but now only on goal difference, after their 1-1 home draw with Athersley Recreation, a late own goal coming to their rescue after the visitors had taken a twelfth minute lead through Oliver McQuillin.

Penalties from Alex Clark and Henry Gardner, and goals from Luca Bolino and Owen Dunkley, secured Harrogate Railway Athletic a 4-2 home win over Glasshoughton Welfare and the Rail are up to eighth.

William Whitehead scored both of Clay Cross Town's goals in their 2-1 victory Armthorpe Welfare whilst there was a 3-3 draw between hosts Dronfield Town and Brigg Town, James Lindores with an 82nd minute equaliser for the home side.

First-half goals from Joel Ward and Kian Tansley secured a 2-1 home win for Staveley Miners Welfare over Ollerton Town with Ewan Birch getting a late consolation for the visitors.

And, Horbury Town were 4-1 home victors against Selby Town as James Cusworth scored twice to help his team move up to sixteenth in the table.
