Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #9

27th August, 2023

32 Toolstation NCEL sides were involved in the opening stage of this season's Isuzu FA Vase with First Round Qualifying ties taking place across the weekend.

Fifteen teams made it through to the next stage with seventeen bowing out of the competition with the next round taking place towards the end of September.

There were four all-NCEL ties with Bottesford Town, Goole AFC, Parkgate and Retford FC all prevailing against league rivals.

Bottesford led three times at home to Nostell Miners Welfare through Joe Wood, Jack Yates and Joe Simpson but, on each occasion, the visitors drew level through Liam Ormsby, Jordan Kershaw and their own Joe Wood.

With ties going straight to penalties after ninety minutes if scores were level, it was the hosts who went through 4-2 on spot kicks.

Ben Gelder struck twice as Goole won 4-2 at Horbury Town, Robert Guilfoyle and Luke Williams with the Vikings' other goals whilst James Cusworth and Thomas Brook netted for the home side.

Parkgate were 3-1 winners at Dronfield Town, Jack Haslam putting them ahead on 25 minutes before a Samuel Bebbington penalty restored parity by the interval.

But, the Steelmen netted twice more in the second period, courtesy of Ross Duggan and Ahmed Tahar, to ensure progression to the next stage.

And, Retford FC defeated hosts Swallownest 2-1, Liam Frost and Matthew Thompson with the Choughs' goals after Desmond Okoro's fifteenth minute opener for the hosts.

There were penalty shoot-out triumphs for Armthorpe Welfare and Rossington Main as they dispatched visitors Winsford United and hosts Wythenshawe, respectively, following 2-2 draws.

Leon Osborne and Scott Dixon scored in the ninety minutes for Armthorpe whilst Ross Hannah and Danny Deakin did likewise for Main.

Elsewhere, a Scott Hutchinson hat-trick secured Brigg Town a 3-2 victory at Bacup Borough and there were goals for Cole Wildin and Dominic Creamer in Knaresborough Town's 2-1 win at Shildon.

There were also away victories for Shirebrook Town and Harrogate Railway Athletic whilst Maltby Main, Silsden AFC and Tadcaster Albion triumphed on home soil.

Kiyani Clayton's double added to Aaron Fell's opener and an own goal as Shirebrook beat Howell Sports 4-2, and the Rail won by the same scoreline at Prudhoe Youth Club with Harry Lane, Owen Dunkley, Joe Payette and Luca Bolino getting on the scoresheet.

Maltby defeated Stockport Town 3-1, courtesy of goals from Oliver Currie, Alex Hardwick and Hakim Johnson in the final quarter of the game, and Ellis Hudson and Casey Stewart were the scorers in Silsden's 2-1 victory over Newcastle Blue Star.

And, a brace from Oliver Norman helped Tadcaster to a 4-2 success over Boro Rangers with Luke Stewart and Jordan Hines also finding the net for the Brewers.

Disappointment, however, began on Friday night as Campion slumped to a 6-0 loss at Whickham whilst, on Saturday, Barton Town went down by a single goal to visitors Stockport Georgians and, despite a Mason Rubie goal, Wakefield AFC bowed out with a 4-1 loss at Droylsden.

Brandon Bagley and Craig Mitchell scored for Handsworth in their 3-2 loss at Euxton Villa, and Frickley Athletic were beaten 2-1 by visitors Barnton with two injury-time goals turning the game completely on its head after Keegan Townrow had put the home side ahead in the first half.

Garforth Town were defeated 3-1 at home by West Allotment Celtic, Tabish Hussain with the Miners' goal, whilst there were 3-0 away defeats for Thackley at Heaton Stannington and for Penistone Church at Lower Breck.

Selby Town and Staveley Miners Welfare both succumbed to 4-0 losses, at Northwich Victoria and at home to Charnock Richard, respectively.

And, Cole Roberts scored for Pickering Town who were eliminated with a 3-1 defeat at Penrith with Oliver Baldwin netting for Beverley Town as they were beaten 4-1 at Prestwich Heys.

Sunday saw three more ties take place with two out of our three sides making the most of their home advantage to comfortably go through.

Albion Sports were 5-0 victors over Billingham Town, Lewis Waddington with two of their goals whilst Thomas Ponter, Eivind Johnsen and Robbie Fox added to the tally in a game that saw the Lions play more than half of the game with ten men.

Ruben Jerome, Ross Hardaker and Joseph Kenny found the net as Emley AFC strolled past Sanbach United with a 3-0 victory.

However, Worsbrough Bridge Athletic could have no complaints as they were beaten 3-0 by visitors Ramsbottom United.

Meanwhile, there were three games in Division One on Saturday with Wombwell Town going to the top of the table with a 3-2 home victory over Glasshoughton Welfare.

The hosts twice led through Edward Agnew and Gavin Allott but they were pegged back on each occasion by Harrison Rowley before Allott's second, from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, grabbed the win.

Louth Town climb to sixth following their 7-1 home demolition of Ollerton Town who drop into the basement on goal difference.

Bailey Wright netted four of the home side's goals whilst Mitchell Taylor, Harris Dunn and Jordan Smith also put their names on the scoresheet, all after Adam Morrison had given the visitors a seventh minute lead.

Yorkshire Amateur moved off the bottom of the standings as two late goals snatched them a 3-2 win at Athersley Recreation.

Danilo Mossolo's early opener for the home side was cancelled out in the opening minutes of the second period by Wilfred Frimpong but Joshua Berry pounced to restore the hosts' advantage on 80.

Frimpong dispatched a penalty to draw the scores level again and then Birama Diallo snatched a dramatic injury time winner as the Ammers picked up their first victory of the campaign.
