Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #7

20th August, 2023

Eivind Johnsen's goal six minutes from time sealed Albion Sports' spot in the First Round of Qualifying for the Emirates FA Cup, joining Tadcaster Albion in progressing through to the next stage on Saturday.

The Lions, who were re-instated into the competition after Chadderton had been removed for fielding an ineligible player against them, took full advantage of their reprieve to claim a 1-0 win at Burscough.

Tadcaster, meanwhile, were 2-0 victors at West Allotment Celtic with the Brewers' goals coming from Lewis Stephens and Joseph Crosby in the second half.

Two more Toolstation NCEL sides could join the pair in the next round with Goole AFC involved in a midweek replay whilst Emley AFC, who have also been re-instated, travel to Lower Breck on Wednesday for their Preliminary Round tie.

Goole were seconds away from securing their berth in the next stage as Liam Flanagan, Ben Gelder and Robert Guilfoyle had given the Vikings a 3-2 lead at Irlam but the hosts equalised in stoppage time to set up a further meeting.

Elsewhere, however, there was disappointment for our sides with Jack Emmett netting for Knaresborough Town but they went down 3-1 at home to Dunston UTS.

Rossington Main were beaten 1-0 at Ashby Ivanhoe, Bottesford Town went down 4-0 at home to Lincoln United, Maltby Main fell to a 3-0 defeat at Carlton Town, and Penistone Church lost 2-0 to visitors Prestwich Heys.

In the weekend's Premier Division action, Campion moved to the top of the table, making it four wins out of four as they beat basement side Pickering Town 5-1 in the Friday night game.

Marcus Day's third hat-trick in as many league matches set them on their way with their tally added to by a Jamie Poole own goal and a Joseph Collery strike.

Keelan Grist, meanwhile, netted the first league goal of the season for the Pikes who have lost their opening five games.

Frickley Athletic, Thackley and Emley AFC climb to fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, after they picked up victories on Saturday.

A quickfire double from Keanen Mannings and Keegan Townrow at the end of the opening period secured Frickley a 2-0 home win over Silsden AFC.

A Thomas Greaves brace helped Thackley to 3-2 defeat of visitors Barton Town whilst Emley won 3-1 at Golcar United, Joseph Kenny, Ruben Jerome and Joe Clegg with the goals for the Pewits.

And, Handsworth were 2-0 victors at Eccleshill United, Harry Wood and Craig Nelthorpe ensuring a win for the Ambers who jump to ninth in the table.

In Division One, Harrogate Railway Athletic remain at the summit despite a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Wakefield AFC, Harry Croft's own goal setting the scene before Mason Rubie and Billy Mole made sure of the points for the visitors.

Brigg Town and Retford United could have replaced them at the top but both sides dropped points with Brigg beaten 2-1 at home by Shirebrook Town.

Declan Bacon scored an equaliser for the Zebras after Aaron Sennett-Neilson had put Shirebrook ahead but Liam Hardy's penalty midway through the second period made it a win for Stephen Bodle's side.

Retford United, meanwhile, drew 2-2 at Horbury Town, the hosts snatching a point from the encounter with an injury-time equaliser from Benjamin Agu.

Nostell Miners Welfare lead four sides who are one point behind the Rail as they move up to second following their 2-1 win at Selby Town, Jordan Kershaw's 62nd minute strike proving to be the vital blow.

A hat-trick from Ross Duggan, added to Silas Valladolid-Collins' opener, made it a fine 4-0 victory for third-placed Parkgate at Glasshoughton Welfare.

And, Wombwell Town complete the top four after Alfred Thompson and Callum Walton struck in their 2-0 victory at Retford FC.

Joshua Berry pounced three minutes from time to grab Armthorpe Welfare a 3-2 home win over Swallownest who remain next-to-bottom.

Yorkshire Amateur stay in the basement as they lost 5-0 at home to Beverley Town, Benjamin Hinchliffe, Joshua Batty, Oliver Baldwin, Joe McFadyen and Scott Phillips the ones piling the early-season agony on the Ammers.

Bailey Wright was the matchwinner for Louth Town as they claimed a single-goal win at Clay Cross Town whilst Staveley Miners Welfare's home clash with Worsbrough Bridge Athletic ended goalless.
